I had to replace my MSI 5600 Geoforce video card after the fan quit and it burned out. I put in a MSI 6200 Geoforce with heat sink and no fan. It seems to work great for general surfing on the internet.
I also installed a Bytecc Internal card reader at same time. The card reader seems to work fine in reading media cards and the internal USB port built in seems to function. However after these changes I noticed some problems loading videos from any web page. Then after some changes ( trying different drivers and reinstalling all the media players: Windows Media, Quick Time, Real Player) I got some videos to play but no sound anywhere, not even in system sound or playing a CD. After trying more drivers and lots of different restores of system, currently have Nvidia 9.1.3.1 which is latest one I could find on Nvidia, I got sound to work again, computer boots fine again, Windows media plays audio files fine, but anytime I try to load an AV video on Yahoo or a movie trailer or similar file it just freezes up. One time I was able to get readings that my CPU was at 99% usage so it seems to be some software problem somewhere that I can't figure out. One driver manual for earlier version siad this sometimes happened with AMD CPU's. On Device Manager I also get readings of incomplete installation with SM controller and ethernet controller devices. I think this refers to the card reader but it seems to work fine and windows update the drivers reports unable to find drivers. I have uninstalled this device several times but it always prompts me to re-install drivers for new device that it finds when I boot up. I tried the drivers that came with the card reader for Windows 98 but they wouldn't install and the company says it doesn't need any drivers for Windows XP. At this point my only thoughts are trying to go backward in installing older drivers for video card to see if I can find one that works with video files. The onces that came with card didn't work nor the one I used for the 5600 card but there are several drivers I have not tried yet. I am also wondering about updating BIOS for myDFI LanParty NFII Ultra B motherboard if there is a reason to believe it necessary. I can get videos to load and play all right if I remove the driver for video display and use the Windows XP VGA generic driver but then all other video response gets real slow and jerky so I am going without the video programs right now but hoping someone here can help me get it fixed. The programs I tried to scan for drivers only indicate I need a new audio codec interface which I tried and then lost all sound so I rolled it back and sound works fine. and one for my HP printer but HP says there are no update driver for this model printer and none are neede. Printer works fine too. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Zatff |

I notice you dont have any replies so here is a bit of advice from me.
I think you do too much at once. I would have said restore, but I guess you cant restore back to the beginnning. I would start with a clean install and add the graphics card first, install the drivers that came on the manufacturer's cd, set a restore point, test and then move on to other hardware. You do way to much at once, so it makes it very difficult to determine the fault. I would clean install, and start over , 1 at a time. just my thoughts, from previous experience. If not, there are driver cleanup programs available, forget what they're called now, but you need to clean up the mess. |

when you install new video drivers, you have to remove the old ones first or they conflict
try a nvidia driver around the 84's as the newer ones seem to be for the latest cards uninstall all nvidia from add and remove reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode disable a/virus install your drivers reboot the computer the driver that came on your cd with the card should always be your backup,if there is a problem with them it will be with the installation method used if you need to use a driver cleaner you can get it here http://www.drivercleaner.net/ the drivers for the reader will be part of xp,are you up to date with sp2 installed with a bios update, check the update contains something you need to update, don't update for the sake of updating

Got it working again at last.
I uninstalled everything (drivers, cards, media players) and started over again. Don't know what problem was but it is working right now and I can view video files and movie trailers off the internet. I think it might have been a problem with Nvidia drivers for the motherboard. I also got rid of the question marks under device manager for SM controller and ethernet controller during the re-installation. I still have the latest Nvidia Video driver 9.1.3.1 and it is working fine now so hope this holds me till I upgrade motherboard and then get a newer PCI video card. Thanks for the suggestions.
