Hi,
Because I use this video card(Radeon 9700) now, so can I change my ATI radeon video card setting in order to achieve best performance if I want to enhance the 3D game's performance? Is it changes the OPENGL and Direct3D setting? Which part should I set it ? Is this changes the video card setting to highest level also is one process of overclocking... ?? This process call as overclocking?? (I'm beginner... I don't know anything about the overclocking...."just only know that it can enhance the processing speed but will cause the overheat happen")..... Which part should I set it please? |

The more things you enable the prettier things will look and the slower they'll be displayed.
Common options are Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering. Turning both of them to OFF or DISABLED can give a good increase in speed with little difference in image quality.

Also, the other thing is resolution. Try turning the resolution in games down and that should help performance a lot.
What kinds of games are you trying to play, and what kind of performance are you getting? With some of the newest games, even the lowest settings won't run well on older computers. Just to explain a bit further: OpenGL and Direct3D are two forms of rendering, both of which your card is capable of rendering. Generally neither has a major performance increase unless a game is coded specifically to optimize one or the other. You can try switching between the two, but you shouldn't see any performance difference. Don't be afraid of switching it: it's NOT overclocking, so it won't hurt your computer. |

The easy way to make the change is to adjust the performance versus quality slider bar. If you're running the older control panel then there are separate ones for Direct3D and OpenGL. If you're running the newer Catalyst Control Center then there is only one control for both Direct3D and OpenGL. Here are screenshots for control panel and Catalyst Control Center. Dragging the bar to the left makes 3D run faster with lower image quality. Dragging to the right makes it slower with higher image quality. Personally, I think it's best to leave settings on application preference and then make adjustments to each game individually.
I've overclocked my 9700 into a 9700 Pro but you have to be careful doing it or you can damage the card. It's especially easier to damage your video RAM when overclocking. I changed my heatsink to one of these before overclocking. You have to be careful installing them or you can damage your video card. I wouldn't increase the speed of the GPU without installing and upgraded heatsink. You also have to understand that it only gains you a small amount of performance and you can permanently damage the video card if you're not careful (and sometimes even if you are careful). |
