Monitor turns off with restart
Hey,
I've recently started having problems with my monitor turning off when I restart my computer - the computer shuts down, the monitor goes to standby (like usual), then I can hear the computer booting up again but the monitor never picks up the signal again - I get flashing green lights on the monitor (no signal), then a steady orange light (standby). Hitting reset doesn't fix anything. In order to fix the problem I have to power off (by depressing the power button for a few seconds), wait a few seconds, then power up again. I have just finished a complete reinstall of my system (reformatted the hard-drive on which I had installed windows, and reinstalled everything). I figured this would fix the problem but no luck. Hardware: It's a rather old 17" monitor. I run it at 1024x786 ATI Radeon 9600Pro 1gig RAM P4 3000MHz I have an adaptor to plug the monitor into the graphics card...I forget what the name is - AVI/GPA I think. Thanks for any suggestions Dan |

Time for a new monitor. Unless it is something particularly nice, or you have some sentimental attachment to it, it is unlikely worth repairing.
Right-click a blank area of the desktop, Properties, Settings See if XP during the reinstallation guessed the right monitor. Head to the web site for the monitor manufacturer and download the appropriate XP monitor profile and install it. If no joy from the above, replace the monitor. .

Hey thanks for the reply
Following your instructions I checked what windows had identified the monitor as: simply a "Plug and Play" monitor. So I tracked down the monitor drivers and installed them but without any luck - I still get a monitor shutoff on restart. By the way the monitor is a 17" CTX PL7 model CEP1772A I have been looking at getting a new monitor...as well as a stereo that works, a twelve string guitar, a car and maybe put a deposit on a small house somewhere, yet I only have $98 (I'm a student) so unless someone else has any suggestions I guess I'll just have to live with it for the time being! Thanks, Dan |

Your video card should have a regular VGA analog output, try using that instead of the DVI->VGA adapter.
