Black screen - Problem

CPU – AMD 64 3500+ (2.2GHz)

RAM –786DDR 400

Video Card(s) – Nvidia 256MB GeForce FX 5700LE - AGP

Power Supply – 450W

Hello.
Yestarday i upgraded my motherboard and processor. I am having a problem with my graphics card. It works fine until i load a game. I have sound but no display, just a black screen. I have tryed uninstalling the graphics drivers and installing the latest ones, also i have tryed with the drivers that came with the graphics card (graphics card is not new). Does anyone know why this could be ? I have tryed with two identical graphics cards and still the same problem. And yes it is compatible.

Here is what i upgraded to. Asus A8V-X Motherboard and a AMD 64 3500+.

Please help if you can.

Thank you.

Can you tell us about the new power supply? Power needs go much higher when doing something more demanding like gaming.

No it didn't sorry. You just posted the link with no explanation. Sorry.

I think 450w would be enough. Before i only had 300w power supply which was why i was having system failures. I can now play Call Of Duty 1 and United Offensive. But i can not play Call of Duty 2 for some reason. When i open it, it plays the opening into then just goes black. I know it's running because there is music in the background.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to why this might be happening, and maybe a solution to the problem ?

Thanks

My System

Run SensorsView to see the temperatures and PSU voltage readings.

Open the case and post back with the details from the PSU label (volts/amps). A low +12v is a known cause for black screens in games.

Do you have the latest DirectX?

Go to Start > Run > dxdiag and run the DirectX tests under the Display tab.

Have you installed the CoD2 patches?

Yes i have the latest Direct x and all tests come back working.

I have a cod 2 patches installede yes, tryed it wihtout the patch and with the patch.

I can't run that programme at the moment becuase i have to re-activate windows everytime i restart my computer. I think this is because my hardware has dramatically changed and the only way to solve that is to buy a version of xp i think :(.

It's not just call of duty it's happening with most other games as well, although i have not tryed re-installing them.

Contact Microsoft about reactivating. They should be able to help you over the phone.

If it's happening with other 3D games as well, it could be a poor quality PSU. Can you tell us the volts/amps from the PSU label?

Thanks. Nice little diagram

I can't remember what the recommended minimum +12v amps is for the 5700LE, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 16a. 18 or 24 would be more likely. I'll try and find out and post back.

Thank you.

Before i was running a 300W powersupply. Which was too low for my hardware, which was why my computer was crashing all the time. But the graphics were fine with the 300w so i would of thought 450w would of been fine. Thanks for the replys and keep the coming please.

Thanks

The problem probably isn't the PSU, 450W are enough for your system spec.,
if it wasn't the game wouldn't run at all, your computer would usually crash if a component isn't getting enough power, but you have sound and can exit the game normally, right? Does your monitor say he's "Going into sleep mode" or does he just stay on? Mabye your game, video driver, DirectX aren't configured properly, sometimes monitors turn off if the get a signal they can't recognize, like if your monitor only support frequencies of 50-70Hz and the game is set for to run at 75Hz, or the resolution is to high to display.
What's the game called? Do you know where it's config file is? If you do open it, it should somewhere say something like 640x480 , 800x600 , 1024x768 or mabye even 2048 x 1024 or anything simular, take a screenshot and post it.

I have sound yes, and for this game - Call Of Duty 2, it now shows the introduction movie and then the screen goes black. The Monitor stay on and does NOT go into sleep mode or stand by. The Monitor clicks as if it is tryin gto change resolution. My current resolution is 1024x768 and 75Hz refresh rate.

The game i think is 800x600 standard resolution but can be changed to whatever, same goes for the refresh rate, standard being 60Hz but can be changed.

As i said before i have tryed loading the game with 800x600 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate but still nothing happened.

I can't exit the game normaly, because i can't see the screen - its black - So i have to Alt+Tab and Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go into task manager and close it that way.

To get into the proper config of the game you have to create a profile first, which i can do because i can't see anything. Someone send me their config file, and i changed their graphics card to mine but still no effect.

It's not only this game that it happens with. Guild Wars as well. Sometimes when trying to open that the screen will either flicker and flash black, or load the game but with a black screen and i am only able to see the curser.

I can't log on my computer at the moment because of a windows actication problem, so i will have to buy a new copy of windows before i get anywhere.

Thanks for the replys and i hope this information can help you come to a conclusion.
