New graphics drivers cause troubles.

I recently reformatted my PC because it was getting slow. I must remind you that before the reformat my games were running as they should have been.

After I had reformatted I got round to installing the graphics card drivers and everything was done so I thought I'd install a game. So I picked up Planetside and installed it, updated blah blah blah however when I went to play the game the menu did not show and I was produced with a blank screen, I could still hear the music and alt+tab out of it with no problems.

So I thought I'd try another so I installed Counter-Strike source and I had a black screen at the menu again but I could still hear noises and alt+tab. So I knew this was a graphical error. I uninstalled my AGP controller and graphics card itself and re-installed my card with the older drivers that came with it. And everything worked again, but there are a few graphical glitches on Planetside but CS seems ok.

So I thought that I'd solved the problem so I updated my card back to the latest drivers and the same thing happened again, so I re-installed DirectX
and no joy. Ran DXDIAG and its all working fien apparently.

Here's my system specs:
PNY Geforce 6600 256MB AGP
AMD64 3200+ S939
ASRock Dual SATA 939 AGP+PCI-E
450W PSU
1024MB PC3200 RAM
Samsung 120GB HDD

What are the "latest drivers" you installed? The 91.31's (latest from NVIDIA) seem to have problems, so if you're using them, try backdating to the very good and stable 84.21's.

I also tried that, forgot to mention it. It had the same issues. Is there a website that has the older official drivers available to download?

So, which drivers have worked, and which haven't (which versions)? If the drivers which came with the card work, then just use them.

What kind of graphical glitches are you getting? You say you reinstalled DirectX. Have you installed the latest version? If not, try that.

Sorry about the delayed reply, sam - I've been out of town on a business trip.

How many games do you have the problems with, and what are they? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling them? Uninstall the games, reinstall DirectX and update video drivers, and then reinstall the games and see how they go.

Do you have another video card on hand to try, to see if you get the same glitches?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure we can fix this problem.

Though I believe that motherboard is a great one, and the ULi chipset was stellar, it did have some problems.

The most noted problem, is that 6600 AGP cards do not work correctly. There was something in the chipset that did not talk with this line of cards correctly. I believe the 6800's may have been affected, and that it was actually the whole 6-series that have problems.

As for fixing this, if you go into BIOS and set the AGP slot down to 4x, it may fix it. You won't have hardly any performance drop either, so don't worry about that.

The other option I'd suggest is to try searching around ULi's website for updated drivers/BIOS, and also search around nVidia's website, since they bought out ULi.

I solved the problem. I removed all the drivers and used a driver clean to be safe. Uninstalled my motherboard's drivers too and installed the Intergrated-driver 2.13 from Uli's own website and it solved the problem. Thanks for taking time to respond to this thread.
