you would expect to find a quality 550w in this system, what brand is it and how many amps does it list on the 12v+ line
see if you can borrow a larger supply to try in it
check what the voltage readings are in the power section of the bios and with speedfan
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download337.html
and post the results

I see two immediate problems. The larger off-color rectangles are an issue with the VRAM. The small blocks running diagonally point to bad pixel pipelines. These problems may both be because of heat buildup. Try running your PC with the side open and a small fan blowing over the hardware.

what are the line readings from the lable on the side
mercury gives no details on their specs, usually a good indication it is low quality

dai and ebackhus beat me to it. Heat would be my first concern. Power supply might also be to blame because of it's low quality.

I had a similar problem recently with an overheated Radeon 9800. To confirm it's damaged VRAM/pipelines, change the resolution and colors (16/32 bit) to see if the blocks pattern changes. On mine at 1024x768 32bit color I got 4 vertical bars of flickering lines, and at 800x600 16bit I got blocks similar to yours.

get a can of air and blow the dust out of the computer
you need a fan low down on the front pulling the cool air in
afan high on the rear exhausting the hot air

My cousin has this exact card, and a similar problem. Did you or anyone oveclock the Video card? If so, that may be causing the heatups and problems. Get some cooling in there-->

right im going to drag this one out from under the carpet again !!!!!
altho my system is exactly the same as when i 1st posted this error i am still getting a niglin little problem!
i couldnt try i a new power suply cos my nearest computer trader has gone bust so i would have had to order one online and to be honest i cant afford it at the mo!
so i took all my cards out and reseated the graph card and vacumed all the dust out the system and then the games( oblivion/cod2 ) worked fine with no problems!
anywayz last month a get me a virus and had to eventually flatten the h/d and reinstall o/s and all my progs games ect ect!
now even tho the screen isnt half as bad as it was when i posted the problem i do still keep getting flashes of graphic distortion every so often but it only stays on 4 a sec or 2 then its back to normal!
even tho i can still play games with this iw ill still like to get to the bottom of this problem? its a strange one

Vacuming may not be enough. I use a real air compressor to blow my system out completely. That means the power supply too. If you can do that then run the system with the cover off and a fan blowing into your computer. That should tell you if temperature is the issue or not. I suspect your PSU or a combination of your PSU and temp if not the card itself.

same problem different system!
well i say different system but listen
i got an upgrade and after getting my graph card that i had this bother with tested at my local pc shop and them saying it was fine, i sold it to my brother along with the cpu, ram, and psu bcos he had a new board and wanted my parts!
anywayz he rings me tonight explaining the exact same problems i had been having earlier!
so it is now either ram psu or graph card!
whats it more likely to be?
i say psu or g/c
