Please Help---lost sound on my PC

A few weeks ago I installed Norton's System Works from a torrent file. It fixed a lot of problems on my computer, but I lost the sound on my computer. I deleted Norton's from my computer so I am not able to use their backup service. I have tried six or seven System Restore points but all of them give me an incomplete error message.

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 (Model 5106 CL) with Windows XP. I tried downloading the sound driver from their website for my particular computer but after I installed it I received an error message saying "Failed to establish direct sound". Instead of hearing the correct sound I receive an error bleep. I would be willing to restore my computer to a previous state, but, as mentioned earlier, every time I try this I get an incomplete message.

If anyone would be willing to take the time to help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it...I really need sound back on my PC! Thank you.

Mike

Hi, welcome to the forums! Norton A/V and NIS are very well known for causing sound related issues. Not knowing what sound solution you have in your PC (add-in soundcard or onboard sound) at least i can at least point you to this FAQ about Norton and Creative sound issues here.
Perhaps it will shed some light on the situation for you. If nothing else i would uninstall the A/V completely and see if that seems to allow sound to work correctly then reinstall it again to verify.
