sound card problem?

hi!
well firstly i have to mention that i'm doing this on someones behalf because they cant get on the internet to post themself. ..so i might not know all the info.

so, okay, a few days ago, the sound was working okay on her computer, then all of a sudden, nothing!? we've tried this winamp thing, and no diffference. ..i've looked online for aaages and i can't find anything that helps atall. we understand it may be as easy as just re-installing the drivers, but this is where another problem comes around .. the computer will only work in safe mode ..and it won't let her access d drive to get to the drivers that may fix this whole thing! we tried something on the microsoft site that said type "win /d:m" in command prompt mode ..but it made no difference.

also, she said that now when it restarts it says that it can't find the sound card ..even though it's still there. and also it doesn't show on the device manager, so she can't sort it out that way.

can any of you help? this is so annoying!
she is using windows 98 and i believe she has a crystal(fusion?) soundcard?
