Strange sound

I'm not sure where to post this, since I'm not sure if this is a sound card issue or not, but here goes: I am a medical transcription student, so I frequently listen to spoken dictations from my computer. The sound has been absolutely fine until yesterday when I went to listen to dictation. Whether the sound is coming out my headphones or speakers, any talking or dictation sounds very "far away," kind of like a bad intercom system. It's hard to describe, but it is not normal. Music through the headphones and speakers sounds just fine, it is just any kind of speaking that sounds bad. Could it be the sound card or something else?

transcription

I am actually in the transcription field. If, in this case, everyting else sounds fine except for the dictation that you are hearing... you could have just stumbled upon a bad recording by the dictator. What platform are you using to play the dictation? Are you transcribing for a company? Is this problem consistent with a certain doctor?

Unfortunately, from time to time you will get a certain doctor that will not speak into the recorder or telephone, or... he tries to dictate on speaker phone which in turn gives you a recording that will sound like a "bad intercom"

I am using Windows XP, and have the transcription software on my computer which I listen to with a WAV pedal. Unfortunately, all of the dictations that I have tried have this same sound, when before they sounded just fine.

Dictation

Who is your employer? Have you tried talking to them about this? This may be a known problem and fixable by them.
