Confused mmsys.cpl error

when I try to run my media player I get a error that says
"windows media player can not play the file because there is a problem with you sound device. There may not be a sound device instaled on your computer, it maybe in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." when I go to adjust audio properties I get an error that says "Error loading MMSYS.CPL a device attached is not functioning". My sound works on something but not on others. Please can some one help me with this. I have a dell octiplex gx110 and I think it has the original sound driver in it. thank you. It is a dell optiplex gx110 and I think that it has the original sound driver in it

It is quite possible that some of the drivers/files that your sound card uses are currupt or missing. You can simply reinistall the drivers and this should correct the problem.

If you have the dell install disk you can extract the drivers and reinstall them from there. It is a fairly straight forward process but if you do need a more detailed description let us know.

YOu can also download the drivers from www.dell.com. Simply enter your service tag and it should tell you what drivers are needed for your system. Download the drivers and again, reinstall. The site does give you instructions on how to do this, but again if you have problems or need more elaborate details. let us know.

If you have managed this and the issue remains. Again, let us know and we well go to step two - diagnosing sound issues on dell desktops 101
