New hardware disabled sound

I recently upgraded my video card: from a GeForce 4 MX to an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. Everything worked with the video card, but at the time I was running my sound off of my Asus onboard sound card. After installing the video card, the sound was no longer working; in fact, the driver for the sound was missing when I went to Audio settings in the Control panel. I am baffled

Any ideas?

Probably because the Radeon 9700 Pro is nor sharing and IRQ with the onboard and for some reason your paticular mainboard didn't like that. What mainboard is it? I'm familiar with most brands and most models.
