SERIOUS no sound problem!!!

OK i am back to square one, i have just succesfully installed a new sound card and i am still having the same problems i did with the old one. No Application will play sound i keep getting errors such as;

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." From windows mdeia player.

"Bad directsound Driver. Please install Proper drivers or slect another device in configuration. Error code:88780078." From winamp

No Flash, or media will play from the internet either.

I have been up and down trying to slove this problem. The soundcard is a Aopen Cobra AW-840, but i am fairly sure it is not an issue. Running windows 2000.

Ok what i have done: I have disabled the onboard sound through the bios setup, this did not help. I have installed and reinstalled the soundcard drivers many times, this did not help. Another issue to add to my confusion is that winamp will give me the above mentioned error message, but i can rectify this by going into winamps options menu and change the direct sound output device from primary sound drive to my sound card. The no sound issue in winamp is fixed and operation of winamp is fine. This does not affect any other issue and sounds else where still do not work. Windows media player has a similar menu but when changed, has no effect.

I have followed all the windows troubleshooting ideas to fix such a problem but they have not helped. The device manager shows no conflicts in and everything looks to be working fine.

When looking in the sound and Multimedia options in control panel i find what look to be related problems. the sound playback, sound recording and midi sections under the audio tab are greyed out and say that no playback, recording or midi devices are available.

In the hardware tab under sound and multimedia options the devices read as such:
CyberDrv CD-R/ RW
Standard game port
CMI8738/c3DX PCI Audio Device
Audio Codecs
legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Device
Legacy Video Capture Devices
video codecs

This is all the information i could think of that would be relavant at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this problem has been bugging me for a VERY long time, and i beleive i have tired every way i know to fix the problem.... i need some HELP!!!!!

JOSH

When something very similar to this happened to me once, I reinstalled the motherboard drivers and it fixed the sound. If you still have the disk that came with the computer/motherboard you could try that. If not, you should be able to get them online at the manufacturers site.

@ mikusj
Have you tried the sound card in another machine and it works fine? Have you tried the card in a different PCI slot? Have you tried installing a new directsound driver like windows is requesting?

I notice your Aopen sound card is not listed but I think it should be
also, what is this "CMI8738/c3DX PCI Audio Device" If this is your old card, you still have drivers on your system for it, and they need to be removed before installing the new ones.

I have tried this soundcard in another machine but did not go as far to see if it would work when drivers were installed, but i have a good feeling that it has nothign to do with the sound card. My reason behind this is that the same problems occured with the onboard soundcard.

the "CMI8738/c3DX PCI Audio Device" is the Aopen card and there has not been a pci card on the system before it on Realtek AC'97 on board sound which has been disabled.

Can you please elaborate on the link? Do you think the system is missing codecs ? thus why it does not play any basic application sound ?

In my opinion, yes it could be the Windows Update.

I say this because a few weeks ago, I did a Windows Update, and although my sound worked partially, It messed up my onboard audio as well...which is Realtek AC97.

The update I installed, was the "updated" sound card drivers, which when I installed them, spybot picked up a few registry changes...one of which was something to do with a "splitter"...I dont remember much. Of course, silly me allowed the change. I restarted my PC after the setup, and I could hardly hear anything. I fixed it...to an extent...I was able to put all the sound to one side (in the mixer). I later figured out (after doing a DXDiag) that I wasnt able to play sounds using a hardware buffer...whatever that might mean.

More recently, though (yesterday in fact), I got a Soundblaster Live! 24bit soundcard. Some things need adjusting, but for me it was the only way to fix it.

Hope I was helpful. Anyway, Good luck on getting everything to work.

Hi, I'm having VERY similar problems to you!

I posted my question here and on another forum, and on the other forum they helped me determine I most likely have an issue with Windows - maybe you do also?

You should read my post "Installed sound card, still have audio problems" for more information. I also have a link there to my other forum post with more detail.

To check if you are in same boat as me, a couple questions:

- Do you have a volume control icon in the taskbar - bottom right corner of your screen?

- When you go into C:\Windows, look for "Sndvol32.exe" and click on it - does anything happen? When you click on "Sndrec32.exe" do you get an error msg?

These were big indicators that my problem is probably Windows-related.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps - even if it doesn't solve your problem - I know how frustrating this can be!!
