Recording Sound problem

Hey I was wondering if you guys could help me with a problem.
My sound works fine, I can play music etc, but when I try to record sound using my mic, nothing works. My brother has the exact same comp, and his works fine. My soundcard is Soundmax. My microphone is properly plugged in, it doesnt need batteries and i think the problem may be the sound card driver, but I don't know.
So is there any suggestions on how I can fix this problem so I can record sound?
Thanks alot.
