Audio probs with IBM

I am having trouble getting the sound to work after reformating IBM Aptiva running win 98. The sound will work with an audio cd, but when I try to play games there is no sound. I've downloaded 3 different drivers as well as installed direct X and neither will fix this problem. Help!!! I've been trying to fix this computer for a few weeks already.

you may be missing some codecs

What is codecs? How do I find out if that is the problem and where do I get codecs from?
