Hello all. I'm really frustrated! First the boring stuff:
OS: Windows 2000 Processor: Intel Pentium III Motherboard: Shuttle Spacewalker Mainboard AV18E On-Chip Sound: VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) OK, this problem all started roughly a month ago, when I was trouble syncing my cell-phone to my computer. I thought uninstalling my (ESS) modem would help. Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't do what I should have done: yank the PCI modem out of my computer, and PNP installed an "updated" (read: wrong) driver for the modem after a reboot, including this nasty bit of software called "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device." Result: no sound. The only "valid" preferred devices options for sound that come up in the drop-down menus under the Audio tab in the Control Panel's "Sounds and Multimedia" are "Modem #2 Line Playback/Record." I used to be able to get sound back by merely refreshing the VIA Audio drivers, but not anymore! I tried uninstalling and physically removing the modem. I tried deleting all the driver files associated with the modem. I tried deleting all instances of "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" and "Modem Wave Driver" in the registry. I tried clicking "Do not map through this device" under "Modem Wave Driver" under the Legacy Audio Drivers Properties. None of this works! I'm at the end of my rope, please help! I'm certain there's something obvious I'm overlooking, but I'm just too dense to figure it out. My video capture (on ATI AIW Radeon 7500) has also quit working, but I think I know how to fix that (it's neither easy nor fun, though). I want to wait until I've fixed this EXTREMELY frustrating audio problem first! |

Um...never mind. I fixed it...kinda.
I guess I monkeyed with the registry too much, as it wound up reloading a whole bunch of drivers ("Found New Hardware." blah blah blah). This actually turned out to be a good thing, as it wound up fixing both the sound and video capture problems in one stroke. Annoyingly, "Modem #2 Line Playback/Record" still come up as options for sound despite the absence of the PCI modem card. But at least they're not the only/default options anymore. --Mike |
