Upgrated to windows XP, now sound doesn't work

I have upgrated from windows 98 se to windows xp. At first I could hear no sounds. After downloading a new driver from gateway I can hear system sounds but I can't play anything using windows media player 10. I even downloaded real player gold and it does not play any sounds. I can play a cd using windows media player, but no mp3's that I downloaded from the internet. Everything worked fine before I upgraded. The new driver I downloaded is supposed to work with windows xp. After I downloaded this driver is when I could start hearing system files. Does anyone have any recommendations. I do not get an error message I just don't hear anything, and it seems to be trying to play. Sound Card: Sound Blaster 16 PCI 64 D

None of the sounds are muted. System sounds work, I can play a CD using windows media player but I cannot play MP3's.

It seems you may need to get the codecs for the MP3's. Do you not get a message saying exactly that , when you try to play them on WMP?
