I'm Dumb. Please Help Me.
I was attempting to record some guitar stuff the other day using an extremely old Yamaha sound mixer (with build in amp) and the on-board audio of my Intel d865perl motherboard. I was setting everything up and (clumsy me
) I happened to let the mic point toward the speakers (at pretty close range too). For those of you who are totally audio-systems-challenged, feedback comes from allowing the output signals (coming from speakers) to feed into the input devices (such as mics). At the same time that I got this ear-piercing feedback, my computer shut off... It turns out that I only blew the onboard audio to shreds and nothing else. Luckily I had an old Creative Labs sound card lying around. So I installed it, and downloaded the drivers. Now, when I fire up the computer, the sound doesn't work. That is, UNLESS I re-install the drivers some time before I shutdown. And when it doesn't work, it gets stuck at the Windows loading screen for at least 2-3 minutes. I'm guessing it's getting stuck trying to find the right audio drivers. What the heck's wrong and how do I fix it? ![]() If it helps, I've reformatted since I killed the onboard audio. |

You might want to go into your bios and check and see if you onboard audio is on or which one is set in first place.

You said there is nothing there about onboard audio; however are there any options for audio? Some times your bios tree doesn't make things obvious and sometimes it just is not in there; It might take you about 10 minutes but explore your bios from every tab going left to right selecting every option and see if there is a hidden audio option in there.
What kind of motherboard is it? Have you gone to the manufactors website to see if there is an updated bios? P.S. Do not update your bios unless you are certain it will fix your problem!!! 1. DO NOT SAVE YOUR BIOS AFTER YOU DO THIS "DISREGARD CHANGES AND REBOOT" 2. BIOS MAKE YOUR COMPUTER RUN CORRECTLY SO BE CAREFUL 3. Just taking precautions if you already knew this chuckle and say -ok george- |

There's absolutely nothing in the bios about audio. I've gone through every tab at least 5 times. Also, I flashed the bios update 6 months ago. I haven't checked for another update since then.
Nowadays, it only does the 3 minute loading screen + dead audio when I turn it off and then turn it back on. Then, when I restart, it's fine.

If a computer has onboard audio, then it has settings for it in the bios. The thing is, it may not say sound, or audio, specifically. So you would benefit to know exactly what it is to look for to change. If you would post some details pertaining to the computer brand, or Motherboard info, and the bios version, we should be able to get specific.

Edit: Okay, I went through the BIOS. The only thing that could possibly have had anything to do with the audio was a feature called "ASF Support" under Advanced >> Peripheral Settings. This menu also included "Serial Port A" [Enable / Disable], "Parallel Port" [Enable / Disable], and Onboard LAN. I looked up ASF on Acronym Finder [click me]. The entry "Advanced Streaming Format (Microsoft)" stands out the most, and that may or may not have to do with audio, but it's definitely NOT a switch to enable / disable onboard audio. Other possibilites include "Advanced Software Framework" and "Active Streaming Format". The option for disabling onboard audio can't just disappear from the BIOS because it doesn't detect the device there, right? (Remember, I did fry the thing.) Lastly, thank you to everyone who's helped me so far. I appreciate it a whole lot. Last edited by Bombario; 05-09-2005 at 11:10 PM. |

This is what I found when I Googled your motherboard.
How can the on-board audio be disabled? The on-board audio can be disabled using the BIOS Setup program. Select the advanced menu, then the Peripheral Configuration screen. The menu offers options to enable or disable the audio if it is present on the desktop board. Refer to the Desktop Board D865PERL Technical Product Specification (TPS) for more details.

If this did enough damage to the motherboard, the sound not working may not be your only problem. Have you tried to contact the manufactor about this problem?
From what I understand, Intel has very good support. Try this page for Intel support. http://support.intel.com/support/fee..._Supp_contact&
