Do I need a 5.1 soundcard for Logitech X-540 speakers?
I am interested in getting some logitech X-540 speakers but I noticed it says that they are 5.1 speakers so I was kind of thinking that I may not be able to use them without a 5.1 soundcard. My motherboard is an ASUS P5Q and I'm not sure if they are capable of using them.
If I need to buy a 5.1 soundcard are they all PCI-E's? I only have 1 PCI-E slot and that is being used by my video card. All help is appreciated, thanks. edit: If this helps the audio at displayed in this image is the type I have:

Re: Do I need a 5.1 soundcard for Logitech X-540 speakers?
Hello and welcome.
If your onboard sound card is 2.1 it can still be used to connect 5.1 speakers. If your sound card was 7.1 I would not advise adding 5.1 speakers. A sound card doesnt slot into a PCI-E slot. You have two PCI slots if one is spare you could add a sound card.

You have the type of slot the card will fit on your mainboard.
Adding a 5.1 sound card and 5.1 speakers would give you excellent sound.just like a decent brand sterio/highfi. I do like Creative sound cards.

The P5Q has an 8 channel Realtek audio chip.
Section 2.7.1 of your manual tells the colour codes. Orange - subwoofer or center Black - rear speakers Lime - front speakers
