Sound Card problem, Antec 900, long story explained....
OK, so here's the deal. Before I get into all of this, I'll provide the information that should be necessary.
My sound card is onboard, it is a RealTek AC'97. The motherboard is: ![]() I apologize for the information but that's a lot of information to jot down and I'm not sure what all you need. So here's the story. I take a nice, long shower. (I'll leave the details out on that) I get out and decide I will clean my house up, but why just clean my house up when I can clean with music? That's when I saw the audio ports at the front-top of my Antec 900. Thought to myself, hey. Never tried these before. With my headphones plugged in on the back, I plug my speakers in on the front. All I get from my speakers is static, so I figure well that's probably because I have the headphones AND speakers hooked up at the same time. Headphones were playing sound just fine, so I unhook the headphones from the back and leave the speakers hooked up in the front. Still all static. I take the green audio jack and put it into the pink audio outlet, thinking maybe it's backwards somehow. This is where the madness starts. My computer immediately shuts down. It doesn't reboot, no. It shuts down. I boot it back up and it shuts back down again. I figure I'm screwed now so I try some things, one of the first things I try is hitting this button I still have no idea what does on the top-left of my Antec 900, this fixes it. I guess before I go on I should provide a screenshot of the Antec 900... http://images.gideontech.com/img/antec_900_002.jpg It's a very small circular black button to the far right-hand side of the tower (the tower, not the image) near the audio outlets. Yeah, that's the magic button I pressed that let my PC boot back up properly again. When it booted back up, I unplugged my speakers of course. Ever since I've had a nice red and white X over my volume and a "No Audio Output Device is installed." message when I hover my mouse over it. I tried rebooting several times, in fact there's pretty much a list of things I've tried. I've tried: # Updating ALL my drivers to EVERYTHING. Rebooting after. # Going into BIOS and disabling the sound. Rebooting. Going into BIOS and re-enabling my sound. Rebooting. # Going into Device Manager. Says "This device is working properly" and there are no errors to be found anywhere. # Went by http://www.fonerbooks.com/sound.htm , ended up at "Hardware Failure". # Googled the hell out of my issue. Tried most everything that came even halfway relevant. So here I am. Still up and about with no sound. I'm thinking my sound card might've gotten fried somehow. When I originally booted back up, my PC would make random clicking noises. Wasn't sure what it was all about. Almost like my fan was hitting something all the sudden, right? That sound eventually stopped entirely. No longer hear it. So what do you think is going on here? To be honest, I'm already looking to buy a new soundcard. Onboard isn't that great anyway. Would you guys recommend any particular soundcard that would be compatible with my motherboard? Nothing that's over 70$. Looking for a newegg link in particular. Any help is nice guys, I realize this is a pretty ****** up situation based off of a bunch of assumptions, but I figure a new soundcard (I don't have an offboard one.... yet!) would be a fix-all deal. |
