Mistake Help Please-Horrible Mic Problems!

Hi, Here is my situation..I am using onboard audio on my asus m3a78-cm mobo..it has the VIA HD audio on it..everything has worked great up until about a week ago..I tried to use my mic and all i got was static and bits of my voice..the only thing affected is the mic..i have literally worked on this for hours and i have installed drivers, used old drivers, used default vista drivers, and still the same old thing is happening..

when i go into my sound properties i see that the recording level for the mic is full (see pic), and there is no sound, i even took the mic out and it still shows full activity..I tried with mic boost off, on, and no luck..

should i just give up on it and say that the mic jack is dying? is this maybe a sign that something else is fixing to bite the dust too? Any help is greatly appreciated..thanks
