Microphone stopped working!

The microphone on my USB headset suddenly stopped recording sound. It won't work in Ventrilo, it won't work in Sound recorder, and tons of tweaking in Control Panel have done nothing. The headphones still work just fine, but no one can hear me.

Today I bought a new headset to see if my old one had just died on me (one with the regular headphone/mic jacks, not a USB), and it has the same problem -- I can hear sound just fine, but the microphone won't pick up sound. My sound card is Realtek AC97. I'm at my wits' end here, can anybody help?

Problem is fixed. Apparently there's a tiny mute button on the mic I never knew about...

This doesn't explain why the new mic didn't work either, but I'm just happy it's cleared up.
