[SOLVED] Evil BS
Hi all,
So I have recently reinstalled XP on to my computer. At it's heart my computer has an SB Live! Wave audio sound card but since then, being a bit of an audiophile, I've added an M-Audio Delta 44 card. My issue currently is that I can't get any audio at all out of my computer. When I was reinstalling all of my drivers something else called a 'Realtek' did also get installed, although I have no idea why. I don't remember buying any hardware or software that had that name to it, however now when I go in to the 'Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices' menu I see that there is also a 'Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager' icon available. This handy little add on wasn't on my computer as far as I was aware prior to reinstallation. Could this be conflicting in some way? When I go in to the Sounds and Audio Devices properties menu the SB Live! Wave device is selected across all the audio and voice tabs etc, so I am a bit clueless what else I am supposed to do to show that I want my sound to be coming out of the two crappy little speakers on my desktop. By the way, word of warning, I am a bit of a nube. Could it be that I am missing something altogether completely fundamental here? :) Thanks in advance, William Last edited by londonboy78; 08-10-2009 at 01:42 PM. |

Re: Evil BS
Realtek is a company that makes the drivers for most onboard sound solutions, every motherboard I've ever used had Realtek sound drivers included. They also make some onboard LAN/network drivers. Don't worry about it, it's harmless.
Unfortunately I don't have XP so I can't help with getting your sound to work, but I can assure you that Realtek is perfectly normal.

Re: Evil BS
Did you install the drivers for the M-Audio Delta 44 card? Where do you have the speakers pluged into . . the onboard sound or the card?

Re: Evil BS
Thanks for the comforting words on Realtek :) Does make me wonder what piece of my hardware it's associated with though... I really don't remember owning any piece of major audio hardware other than SB Live and M-Audio. Could it be related to my Toshiba mp3 player??
I have two normal desktop speakers and one woofer on the floor. I also have two larger Yamaha NS-10 speakers which are plugged in to the M-Audio soundcard and a lot of other audio junk that I haven't even gotten round to switching on yet (God help me there). They shouldn't interfere with this issue, or at least they didn't on my original set up - they are supposed to simply be hooked up for playback of anything I record on Cubase. The speakers are plugged directly in to the green port on my SB Live! soundcard at the back of my computer. Last edited by londonboy78; 08-11-2009 at 01:54 AM. |

Re: Evil BS
Just to say that I managed to resolve this by going in to my system manager and uninstalling the realtek audio driver. Whilst initially there was no change, when I came back the next day my computer had downloaded some update and suddenly I have sound!
When I go in to my device manager there is a realtek driver there, but this time it's called Realtek High Definition Audio, so I am presuming that the original audio driver that I downloaded was only compatible with XP SP1 or something like that. So when I upgraded my Service Pack it suddenly didn't work any more... that's speculation obviously but it seems to tie in with what just happened. |
