Compaq Presario v6000 sound card?

Ok, so today I was on Skype with the GF and I'm running Counterstrike as well, all of a sudden the counterstrike sound locks up really bad, so I "quit game". I then have no sound, and the skype window tells me "problem with recording device", and "please check audio settings and make sure you have the right microphone selected". I've gone through all the settings stuff with no joy. I have no sound at all. What's the problem? Is my sound card dead? This really sucks as I am overseas right now.......

Re: Compaq Presario v6000 sound card?

Have you tried to reinstall audio drivers?

What are your temps?

I've been saying this a lot lately but running a livecd of linux to see if you have sound should tell you if this is a hardware problem or not.

If you are unfamiliar with a livecd, basically you burn an iso image to a CD and boot to the cd drive and you have a working copy of linux running on your system. When you are done testing, you remove the CD and reboot and you are back to your Windows Vista install.

I've been recommending Ubuntu lately and here is their download page with instructions.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Compaq Presario v6000 sound card?

I have fantastic news to report. When I got up this morning and fired the little beast up, I HAD SOUND!!!!

I think I just overstressed it, over heated it or something.....I had left it on for a while, it was a little warm.....

Anyway, it's all good for the moment. Just one further question, is the sound card a separate unit on this model or is it integrated into the motherboard?

Thanks for the response.

Not sure if you can get your hands on this but a can of compressed air can do wonders to an overheating laptop.

Sound is integrated into the motherboard.
