sound only works with select programs!!!

Im spending the summer at my grandparents house and my grandma has a dell xps 400 desktop computer. my dad is a computer guru but hes 500 miles away and i cant get the sound to work on any other programs than windows media player and mah jong. she only has the built in speaker built in to the monitor. i tried downloading sound drivers off of the dell website after seeing multiple lenks to that website. i TRIED to download soundblasterxtrememusic which wuz reccomended for the XPS 400 on the website... it said that it couldnt find a sopport and im not smart enough to go any further with out a little help.

What do you have set as the default audio device?

Control Panel >> Sound and Audio Devices >> Audio tab >> Sound playback.

There are actually 4 different types of cards that could be in that system. Let us know what it says and we can help with finding drivers.
