Speaker Icon In bottom right of task bar missing and sound not working for many prog!
Hi, I really need some help~ I have been without sound for about a week now. I have tried everything I know plus more to try and get my sound back. One day the sound wasn't working I went to adjust volume and speakes were gone. This did happen after I had been deleting unused things and unistalling unused programs etc. Sound does not work in many programs such as, IE, Firefox, Yahoo Messenger. Sound does work in Windows Media Player and Java powered game rooms. The sound control on my keyboard is also not working.
I tried to update windows updates. I tried to reinstall/repair the sound card. I tried deleting and reistalling the sound card all together. I tried system restore points but my computer did no change to the farthest back (6 days) I could go and every point before that the restore was unsuccesful. I have used the XP troubleshoot menus. I have checked all sound tests and they report the sound working and drivers detected. There are no red or yellow marks beside any audio files. I went threw and tried everything I thought may work for my problem I found in this forum. No luck! My PC Model is Dell Dimension 1160/B110. My sound card is SoundMAX Digital Audio. I running Xp. I hope I have provided you with all the information you need and thank you for your help ahead of time! -Ashlee |

You can try a repair install of Windows XP. Might be the easiest way to deal with this.
You will need a Windows XP disc for this, not a restore or recovery disc. Not sure what Dell did for that system. Here is a link to instructions on how to do this: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Read the warnings and back-up your data. Pauldo |

Re: Speaker Icon In bottom right of task bar missing and sound not working for many p
Hey, thank you for your advice Pauldo. Unfortuantly a friend put this copy of xp pro on my computer and I do not have access to a disc therefore I will not be able to try this repair. :(
I was talking to my Dad and he says it sounds like a trojan virus so he is giving me a copy of his virus scanner/protector to scan my pc and see if it finds anything. Hopefully this works, or I will have to reformat everything. If you have any other suggestion I would really appriciate them. :) Thanx, Ashlee |

Virus could do that as well. Either way you will more than likely need to do either a repair or reinstall.
Please let us know how it goes though. Hopefully removing any virus' gets it working again. Pauldo |
