I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
I have a Dell XP720 INTEL Core2duo 6600 running @ 2.40gHz and Vista Business SP2. I have an NVIDIA GEForce 8800 GTS OC, & 3 mB of RAM. My sound card is the SB X-Fi Extreme OEM that came with the PC. I have updated the drivers and it was working fine. The latest being from 11/08. It suddenly stopped playing any windows sound, the WMP won't play any wma files and quicken doesn't have any sounds. Itunes, however, does play as well as a game called FarCry. The speakers test fine under the windows devices but thesting the card under the sound applet in Control Panel fails. I have tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail. I tried driver update under Device Manager and it tells me the best driver is installed. Any ideas?
Thanks Jose

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
SPDIF out. Below that it says:Creative SB X-Fi and then "working". BTW, my speakers check out and are working when tested. I have no sound when I access websites on either Firefox or IE; Games like Luxor and Farcry have sound and, although part of Windows, Solitaire has sound.

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
What speakers are you using? Stereo speakers?
SPDIF is for ouputting sound to a stereo receiver. If you are not doing this then what happens when you change your default audio device to the Creative SB X-Fi. Pauldo |

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
I am using Harman-Kardon speakers on a 2/2.1 config with 2 satellites and a sub-woofer. Using Creative Audio Control Panel, I have everyhting set to Default settings for this card. Using Windows control Panel, as you asked, I checked again and I will explain myself better. The Default is set to SB X-Fi and speakers not to SDIF. When I go into the speaker/Card default icon I can test the speakers and I get sound. What I can understand is why I have selective sound where some apps have aound and otheres not and. of course, how to fix this. It is frustrating! Thanks for taking your time to help me and tell any other steps you can think of.

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
Tosh, I mean any wma, wvm, mpeg etc.. Windows media player will not play any of those. The browsers are totally silent and the usual windows sounds (Start, end, fault etc) are also gone. Win DVD Platinum also is mute as is Win Media Player when I put in a DVD to be played. Games have sound. I tried FarCry and Luxor and they work as well as Solitaire and other Windows games. This is what throws me off: Why the selective "muteness"? Thanks for helping out.

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
Maybe trying a complete uninstall then re-install of the soundcard might kick things back into gear.
If you have no windows sounds and the Creative Console fails to test than that might be the best thing to do. It was hard to tell but I think your machine has integrated audio? If so, check to make sure that isn't enabled for some reason. Pauldo |

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
Hi Pauldo
I uninstalled the card completely. Out of the PCI slot and reinserted it. The integrated sound is off. I actually tried to use it after I took the card out but Dell did not provide plugs for the speakers so I couldn't try it. Anyway, when I go to devices, I have an icon that says "speakers", which is the SB card. I hit "configure" & get a window with 2 speakers and a button "test". Both speakers test well and have sound. When I go to the tab "sounds" none of the windows sounds work. As I said before: Games, both Windows games and PC video games work with full sound. I can paly any videos because I have no sound in either browser I use, Firefox & IE8, neither WinDVD, Quicktime or Win Media Player have sound either. I reinstalled the codecs as Tosh adviced to no avail. I tried Windows Restore but, as usual, it didn't work and couldn't go back. I am out of ideas.

Re: I have no Win sounds but some apps do.
Hey, Tosh. I went to the link (very interesting article) and followed instructions. Unfortunately it didn't work. I actually had to search for the correct version (3.3) since the new one 4.9 doesn't have the particular fix the article talks about. Again, I'm still mute. Thanks again.

Here's a walk thru: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
Make sure you have a copy of the original XP CD, just in case. And as always, BACK-UP your important files. Pauldo |
