headphones no longer working?

I recently installed windows vista ultimate from xp, and my headphones were working. Now, with vista, headphones dont work and only the speakers work. I have realtek r2.21 high definition installed, and i tried un-installing and re-installing, nothing works. i also tried unplugging the jacks and still no difference. When i go to sound in control panel, it identifies headphone and microphone but i hear no sound. What should I do? Should i downgrade back to xp or..?

Re: headphones no longer working?

What are your system specs? Is this a laptop?

What did you mean by unplugging the jacks? Did you mean your speakers?

Have you looked in your Realtek audio manager? Make sure that you enable pop-ups for when you plug something in. Also, check in the Mixer tab to make sure that your volumes are good and not muted.

Typically, the speakers are designed to turn off when you plug in your headphones and then turn back on when you unplug. Might be too coincidental, but the jack may be malfunctioning. Have you tried moving your plug around to see if you can trip the switch?

Re: headphones no longer working?

This is a PC, and by speakers I meant the ones on the monitor. I meant when I unplug the headphones and plug them in again nothing changes.

Realtek audio manager? I dont have that and I searched it but I cant find it...

Re: headphones no longer working?

So anything Realtek oriented in Control Panel?

If not, than what drivers did you use? From Realtek or from your pc manufacturer?

Re: headphones no longer working?

I cant find anything Realtek in control panel, but I downloaded Realtek r2.21 when I had no sound driver. Now, when I go to Sound properties, it says High Definition Audio Device and under it 'Microsoft'. Any ideas?

Re: headphones no longer working?

Yeah, but were did you download it from?

Here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Or from your computers manufacturer/mobo manufacturer.

It should say Realtek so maybe the install went wrong. If you can give me some specifics about your computer I might be able to delve further into this. Make/model # of your computer or mobo if it is a custom build.

What's it say in device manager?
