No sound after opening a few programs

Whenever I initially log in, i have sound, but once i open a few programs like diablo 2 and Warcraft, i lose sound and it doesn't come back. I've tried reinstalling my sound drivers, but that didn't help at all. Before this started i used to get a weird "ticking" sound in mm headphones, so i know it was not my fan. Can anyone help me? im not sure what to do. I have no clue what sound card I have but i know i got: Pentium 4, and a p4xb-m mother board

My System

Re: No sound after opening a few programs

What are your temperatures like? You can download Speedfan to see what they might be (link is in my sig). It is always best to double check these figures with what is reported in your Bios.

You have onboard audio (assuming no one has upgraded to a dedicated card) on that motherboard. The early versions of onboard audio, which yours is, were not the greatest. They were often plagued with noise, static and other sounds.

Have you tried drivers from Realtek's website? http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

When you say the you lose sound and it doesn't come back, does that mean that all your sound is gone? Windows sounds, music from a media player? If you are playing a game it is highly likely that you have a heat issue.
