Unable to record audio on computer

Note: Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Hey,

I've recently tried to record a radio-stream broadcast over the internet using a program called 'Audacity' (latest version) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audacity]. I tried to record the audio that was being played off the internet site this radio broadcast was being played on, but for some reason it didn't record any audio at all.

I figured it may have been just the program (which only gave me the option to record from 'Line-in' and 'Microphone') but then I tried to record the audio using a game-recording program which also records audio, which didn't work either. This lead me to believe that my computer was incapable of recording direct audio within itself, most likely an issue with my sound drivers.

Here are my current audio settings/drivers (found in 'Control Panel' under 'Sound and Audio devices) [Windows XP operating system, SP3.]

(Note: Images below are Thumbnails, hosted by ShareImages.com, click to enlarge)

I currently have my speakers set to 'Laptop Mono Speakers', as I am using a laptop.

These 3 'Default Devices' here are the only ones I can see when using the pull-down menu.

If anyone could possibly help to resolve my issue, so that I may record from the computer properly, I'd greatly appreciate it. Feel free to prompt me if more information is needed.

Re: Unable to record audio on computer

You need Wave Out or Stereo Mix. Often times on laptops this capability is 'turned off'. Sometimes this can be fixed by updating the audio drivers. Have you looked to see if there are newer drivers from your computer manufacturer?

Re: Unable to record audio on computer

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I'm currently on a Hewlett Packard G6000 laptop, yet I'm not sure exactly how to locate these audio files, as I did search for some drivers for my model and only found 'Symantics touchpad' and 'Wireless LAN' drivers. Is there anything you can suggest that will help to locate the drivers and then their updates? I found one application called 'Driver Detective', it supposedly updates drivers after detecting flaws or missing drivers, would you recommend it?

Re: Unable to record audio on computer

I was about to tell you that it couldn't be done when I found this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex...

It appears pretty darn old (2003) so not sure if it will open up Wave Out or Stereo Mix but it's worth a shot.

You could also try going into Device Manager and Right-Click on your audio device (should say something about Conexant) and click on Update to see if there is a newer Windows XP driver that allows Wave Out/Stereo Mix.

There is one other thing. Audacity talks about using a patch cord going from your line out to your line in that can be used if you can't record from your computer. Might be worth a shot in this case as it might be cheaper than a usb sound device.

Let us know how it goes.
