I'm running a dell dimension 4550 and up until a couple weeks ago, my sound worked fine, but now it doesn't work... at all. My sound drivers appear to be in tact, with a little error (hell if i knew what errors there are and if they effect the sound output) there is however evidence that someone has recently used the disk cleanup system tool. and until i got another copy of the volume control from a friend, i could not open the volume control (which means it was deleted) but even with the volume control newly installed and replaced on my pc, it still doesnt wanna appear in my bottom right hand corner system tray.
anybody have any ideas? |

Re: sound isnt working
Go START > RUN... > type DEVMGMT.MSC and hit Enter...
Do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points next to some device??? Un-install old sound drivers [you can uninstall them in Add/Remove Programs], restart PC, install new sound drivers, restart PC... Hope this will help you =) Keep us posted... |

Re: sound isnt working
Probably.
Have you tried re-installing your audio drivers? Uninstalling the ones already on there before the re-install is probably best. Go here to download newest ones: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= |

do i uninstall them by right clicking them or what? and how can i be sure they wont charge me or something at the end, and where do i save them to? i'm just afraid to do anything without being sure that i wont permanently dig myself deeper into the hole. (normally i wouldnt be so reluctant but truth is this is my friends pc ive been trying to fix from a remote location.)

Re: sound isnt working
You go START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS...
Un-install sound drivers there... Restart PC... Download new drivers from Dell's Web Site, they are not charging driver download... Install new drivers... Restart PC... |

well i use one of those sets of speakers that plugs in the colored holes ( i would say analog but im not sure if thats the correct term or not) and i just downloaded the AD3.DLL driver and im about to restart the computer but im unsure if this is gonna work because i saved it in the correct folder, overwriting the current version of the same file that i have. is this the correct way to go about this?

Re: sound isnt working
The downloads from the Dell site are .exe files. To do this the right way you need to do what Vladimirb said and go into Contro Panel>>Add/Remove Programs and find the listing for your audio driver and click on Uninstall.
Once that is done, you click on the downloaded .exe file and it will install the driver for you. Pauldo |

ok i downloaded R56339.exe, (some analog sound control thing) and it ran it, it extracted into the correct folder. it said i had to run a file inside it to install the file or something. i ran the file and it said driver not found, please reboot your computer and rerun this program or something. well i did, but it rang up with the same error message. what do i do? or did i download the wrong thing? and i cant uninstall the drivers from add/remove programs cuz i dont know what the names of the programs are on that list. dont wanna delete anything that i might regret.

Re: sound isnt working
You will want to look for either ADI, SoundMax or Creative in Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
If that one didn't work than maybe you have the Creative Live!5.1 on your system. Go back to Dell's download page and download the Creative driver and see if that works. Let us know how it goes. Pauldo |
