audio cd plays OK system sounds do not

My system is running Windows XP with SP2 installed. The sound card is a Turtlebeach Santa Cruz. Audio CD's play normally from either of the optical drives, but system sounds -- like Windows start etc. and the audio tracks on net streaming audio do not. Nothing is muted (that I know of). When I go through system etc. to the sounds, the play triangle icon is greyed out. Device manager says the device is working properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but still no system sounds or net audio.

Help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

What is your default playback device under the Audio tab in Sound and Audio Devices?
