Headphones dont work on Inspiron 640m

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 640m laptop running Windows XP. If I boot up without the headphones plugged in and then try to plug them in I do not get any sound. When I unplug them the internal speakers work fine. If I boot up with the headphones plugged in it will work 75% of the time but as soon as I unplug them and plug them back in it doesnt work. Has anyone had this problem or know of anything that could help? Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem (though I'm running Vista). I'd like to know if a solution was ever found. Thanks!
