The other day there was a power surge and it affected my pc forcing it to restart. Even when i went to turn it off it restarted and kept blue-screening. I had to re-install XP using the disc and run a 'chkdsk' test to repair some corrupted files.
Now that i have re-installed XP i found out that there is no sound, even when my pc starts up there is no sound, apart from the start up beeping. I don't think it is my monitor because i tried headphones and it still doesn't work. Other things i have tried are checking the volume, downloaded/installed both Realtek ac97 and HD audio codecs, went on MSI and downloaded/installed motherboard drivers. I checked the device manager and it only mentions the second 'scsi/raid host controller' having the error code39, but i'm not sure that's anything to do with sound. So i don't know what to do after all that. Any help would be appriciated. |

Re: Help! No sound from my PC.
Check the device manager in the control panel to see if there are any driver issues. I had something happen recently with my XFI gamer card and I had a driver conflict with the on-board HD Audio. Everything is fine now after I uninstalled the drivers. I now have sound with my Card.
Good Luck. Jones

Re: Help! No sound from my PC.
This issue might or might not be a software issue. The power surge may or may not have damaged your hardware. To check whether it is so or not:
1. Open Device Manager. Open the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" node. See if your audio device is listed there. (Posting here the names of all devices under the node would help.) Also, see if there is any "Other Devices" node in device manager with a yellow question mark icon. (It would help if you list its subnodes here.) Try deleting them and see if your audio device is detected by then. 2. Check your computer's BIOS Setup to see if your Integrated Audio device is enabled. If it proved to be a hardware problem, you have to take your motherboard or sound card to an authorized repair center. To prevent such disasters in the future, ensure that your computer is protected by a Surge Suppressor and that the file system of all your hard drives is NTFS.

Re: Help! No sound from my PC.
Here is my device manager. The only yellow error i've got is the one shown.
![]() I can't seem to find the 'other devices' node. Sorry i'm not very familiar with this. What exactly do i need to delete? I don't know how to enter the BIOS either ![]() btw what is a surge supressor? I use a surge protected extension, where all my pc plugs are plugged into, but obviously it didn't work. |

Re: Help! No sound from my PC.
Well, obviously your sound card is well detected. I see a Creative SB X-Fi and a Realtek High Definition Audio device. This part seems OK.
Let's start with standard procedure. 1. Try playing different audio files. Try different extensions/types such as an MP3, a WMA, a WAV, etc. Even Open Control Panel, Sound d Audio Devices and see if the Windows event sounds can be played. What is the result? Do you hear no sound or do you get an error message. 2. Now, check your volume control. Check Windows Volume on task bar and make sure Mute check box is not checked. Make sure your headphone or speakers are also not mute and their volume is loud enough. 3. Make sure you speakers are connected correctly. Check the connection port. Speakers are usually connected a green port. 4. Since you seem to have an additional sound card, try connecting your Speakers to the other port. I.e if it is now connected to Integrated Audio of your motherboard, connect it to your Sound Blaster port; or vice-versa. You can try disabling your Integrated Audio from BIOS setup program and see it let your Sound Blaster to work properly.

Re: Help! No sound from my PC.
I've fixed it! I didn't know that Creative SB X-Fi and a Realtek High Definition Audio device were similar, not until you mentioned it.
I looked at sound and audio devices in the control panel and changed the option of sound playback from Realtek to SB X-FI and it worked! When i re-installed XP it must of changed the defaults. |

Re: [SOLVED] Help! No sound from my PC.
Glad to be of help.
But... Similar? I didn't say that. In fact, Realtek HD and Creative SB X-Fi are two separate things. You just had connected your headphone to Creative SB X-Fi... ![]() ...while the computer played through Realtek HD. ![]() Now it plays through Creative SB X-Fi. Good Luck
