Rosegarden MIDI

On my machine running debian linux, I want ot use rosegarden to notate music and play it back. The eidence suggests that I have a MIDI card but rosegarden will not play back at all and neither will any other notation program. I have set up my card in the little midi setup menu in rosegarden. Is there a way of testing whether midi works at all or whether it is just the notation editors?

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

Might want to post in the Linux forum. Also, for getting the best help, please post system specs. In this case, specifically your sound card. If your computer is not a custom build, make/model # will do just fine. If it is a custom build, list out everything, just in case.

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

Just found this: "Rosegarden requires and uses ALSA to run your sound card."

Here is the link to the ALSA SoundCard Matrix, which will tell you if your sound card is supported. Might help when you talk to the Linux guys on this forum.

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

I don't actually know so much about my system specs due to various modifications and have lost track. It has a 900mhz processor though and running lspci -v | grep audio returns:

00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. Device 4511
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5
I/O ports at dc00 [size=256]
I/O ports at e000 [size=4]
I/O ports at e400 [size=4]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: VIA 82xx Audio
Kernel modules: snd-via82xx

My sound works normally and my card is listed in the list provided.

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

Your onboard sound is not on the list.

Posting in the LInux forum might yield some more results.

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

VIA is on the list, though if that's not what needs to be on there you may be right. There does indeed seem to be some pretty heavy support for posting on the Linux forum and so I just might do that.

Re: Rosegarden MIDI

If you clicked on the Via link it would take you to a page that lists out what chipsets it supports. I did not see yours on the list.

I can record from my midi keyboard and play the recording TO my midi keyboard, but I want to play it on my computer.

I have messed with Jack and Rosegarden as documented throughout the web and now I fear that I have created a terrible mess of it all.

What should I do to clean it up and how can I get sound to play through computer?

I am not good at this stuff so please be patient or offer to help for a fee. My intentions are not to become an expert on linux, but to be able to use rosegarden as a tool to create music.

When I run that command I get NOTHING.
should I post here what I get without the -v ?
