My sound randomly died.
For no apparent reason a few weeks ago my sound died. I turned my laptop on and got a few error messages. I have never really had problems with sound before so have no idea how to fix it. Here is a screenshot of the error message.
![]() ![]() Its onboard sound fyi. As you can imagine having no sound is extremely frustrating so would be very grateful if someone can explain how i can fix this.. Thanks Nick, Here is the details of the sound device. SiS 7012. Last edited by nickGT; 10-04-2008 at 12:20 PM. |

Re: My sound randomly died.
Sorry no one has posted sooner. Usually replies are much quicker around here.
What is the make/model of your laptop? Have you done any Windows updates recently, maybe to SP 3? Have you installed anything recently? Software or hardware. Do you have the original install discs from when you purchased the laptop? Pauldo |

Re: My sound randomly died.
Thanks for your reply.
I updated to sp3 the day i posted this thinking it might fix it, the only programme i installed was everest and that was the day i posted this also. I am not entirely sure of the model of the laptop but it is an Advent. Thanks again. |

Re: My sound randomly died.
It would help a lot if you could find the model #. Laptops usually have a sticker/plaque on the bottom that gives this info.
That said, do you have a 'Utility and Driver CD' that would have come with the computer? You are going to need to re-install your system drivers. The CD that came with the computer would be the easiest way. If not you will need to find out what model # of your computer is and go online to find the drivers. As for why this happened, what do you use for virus and spyware security? Do you have any little ones running around that like to pound on the keyboard? Pauldo |

Re: My sound randomly died.
Yes, it appears that you do need to remove all traces of the audio driver. I've seen posts go so far as using registry cleaners and others that just uninstalled the audio device from within Device Manager.
I would just uninstall from Device Manager (reboot) than try to install that driver again. Make sure that you don't have any references to Sis7012 in Add/Remove programs. If that doesn't work, sometimes installing the driver from within Device Manager works. I'll leave you with the link to a website that details this problem, just in case nothing is working. It may or may not help. http://www.computer-aid.com.au/blog/2006/12/18/error-536870397-while-installing-7021-sound-alc655-on-a-sis741-mb/ Let us know how it goes. Pauldo |
