No sound

I recently had a virus and used HP recovery and of course now I don't have any sound. I went into safe mode and deleted all of the video and audio devices and drivers. There weren't any that had the x or exclamation point. I reinstalled the Realtek driver and still have no sound. My computer is an HP Pavilion a630n Desktop PC. I've tried all of the basic support steps to get this thing to work and I don't believe I have the CD that came with the computer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: No sound

If HP Support couldn't help with your sound problem, I can't.

But why did you use a recovery because you had a virus

Recovery Procedures are NOT for use in cleaning viruses.

Aren't you running a good AntiVirus?! Like McAfee or Norton.

You should be running an ADDITIONAL anti-spyware utility, like SpyBot Search & Destroy (donationware).

Having both antivirus & anti-spyware running is a requirement from Corporate IT where I work. SpyBot was one on their list, and I've used it since the Win98 days, very good and reliable.

Also, a comment on general virus protection. There is no virus protection utility that can protect you from a virus that arrives on your system before they know about it and can formulate a protection (provided at the next update). If you leave your PC on AND remain online you are maximizing the risk of virus infection.

To maximize your protection either go off-line or shut your PC down when you're not actually using it.

tecknomage my friend,

I would actually have preferred to converse with you privately about this matter rather than the public forum but now i am more irritated that, after looking in your profile, it seems that you have blocked that option.

I am studying malware removal and, to be honest, i personally, (and many others here on this site would back me up) think that the above advice is very bad.

Using bloatware like the so called security suites offered by McAfee and Symantec is a surefire recipe for disaster and will in most cases bring a pc to the point where the only option is to end up in the Hijack This Help forum.

Perhaps you are a little behind the times?

Re: No sound

If device manager have no problem shown, it could be that the sound device did not select properly.

go to control panel > sound and audio device > audio tab
see sound play back if default device is selected to Realtek HD Audio Output

Hi Ried0602, and welcome to the forums.

Sorry i didn't reply, just in a bad mood at the time.

I'm afraid that we could go around in circles for a long time with your problem, but at the end, we would end up in the same place, Here

Follow the steps carefully, reading all the instructions slowly and if there is anything you don't understand, please feel free to pm me anytime.

Hi Ried, welcome back.

Click on this link and download these drivers.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software5/COL10368/pv-29786-2/sp26552.exe

It is not good to start another thread about the same problem. It is against forum rules.

Re: No sound

Hello Ried, you need to install your chipset drivers prior to installing the sound drivers. To be honest, we could've got here quicker and for that I am sorry.

Please do the following:
  1. Set a restore point
  2. Download and install this: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/conf...Name=&lang=eng
  3. Restart.
  4. Install and install this: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/softwar...-2/sp26552.exe
  5. Restart.

Your sound should now be working. If so set another restore point then go here and make sure the rest of your drivers are up to date : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...product=426322

Re: No sound

Bigfella, I followed the directions you wrote above and I still do not have sound. Do I need to delete the realtek and then reinstall everything. I do not have the original sound icon next to the time display. I have this sound effect icon and when I click on volume, it says "there is a problem with your sound hardware. to install mixer devices go to control panel click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware".

Re: No sound

It should be control panel > add hardware. There you will find the hardware wizard. Did you try that?

Do you have an XP disc?

Re: No sound

it's very possible that you need the KB888111 update for your RealTek sound card. At work we use Intel motherboard that's have integrated RealTek audio cards, most are HD compliant and not AC'97. What I've noticed through experience is that RealTek uses an emulation to produce sound, if the emulator is not detected by the O/S you will not see any indication of the hardware in device manager.

SP3 has KB888111 in it. The thing that I'm confused about is you said you did a Recovery and well, a Recovery is an exact image of your computer when you got it which means everything works. Check the BIOS and is if Audio is disabled.

On a side not, DeeJay I completely agree with you about your comments on Techomag. The scary thing is it's people like him that give advice to someone who probably knows more than him, they believe him and when people like you and I try to help them it's hard for us to convince them that the info they received previously was poor or out-of-date.

Re: No sound

I went into the Bios and sound is enabled. In device manager I do see the realtek device in the DM and when I click on properties, it says it is working properly.

Re: No sound

Hi Ried, if you have enabled the sound in the bios, and followed my directions above, then you should have sound. Please download PC WIzard and install it, run it and go to FILE< SAVE AS and click OK. Then copy that text into this thread. Also go into Device Manager and tell me if the sound device shows up under sound and if there are any yellow exclamation mark "bang" icons there.

Re: No sound

Please check that you are refering to the Realtek sound, and not the network card in device manager.

If you are still convinced it is working in device manager, please check in control panel to see that it is correctly set.

Control Panel - Sounds.

Check the options there to ensure that the correct speakers, volume etc are set.
