no playback device

when my computer got a virus i reinstalled windows xp and ever since there's been no sound and it just says "no playback device" windows audio is set to automatic so i really have no idea what to do next. The speakers are plugged in but there's still no sound

please help

After the reinstsall did you install the motherboard chip set drivers?
They should be on a system disk that came with your pc or mortherboard.
If you no longer have the disk what brand and model pc do you have?

i have a tiny computer it's old so i don't think we have any of the disks anymore

If you can come up with a brand and model we can find the drivers have you looked all around the case the back, the bottom for example.
if not you can d/l everest and post the report.

all i know is that it's a tiny one that was originally windows 98 so i'll try the other thing
