need help getting sound to work

I just formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP and my sound is not working. How do I get sound to work.

What is your computer make/model?

Did you go to the manufacturer's support site to download all of the drivers you need after the reinstallation?

I'm not sure. we got it from a friend who got it used at a yard sale. they didnt have the papers that go with the computer or any other things that came with the computer

It will usualy have the make and model number on the front...

Download/install a nice hardware ID program called Everest Home

After you run it, tell us what it shows as your Motherboard name and the name for your Audio Controller.

the motherboard name is:Abit SA7, But where would i look to find the name of the audio controller

I was looking around the everest program and I found this:
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
is that the name of the driver?

Go to the Abit support web site and download/install the drivers you need:

I downloaded it, I opened it, I clicked on setup, a window poped up, i clicked run, the window disappeared, and nothing happened. does anyone know how to make it work?
