need help getting sound to work

I just formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP and my sound is not working. How do I get sound to work.

What is your computer make/model?

Did you go to the manufacturer's support site to download all of the drivers you need after the reinstallation?

I'm not sure. we got it from a friend who got it used at a yard sale. they didnt have the papers that go with the computer or any other things that came with the computer

Download/install a nice hardware ID program called Everest Home

After you run it, tell us what it shows as your Motherboard name and the name for your Audio Controller.

I downloaded it, I opened it, I clicked on setup, a window poped up, i clicked run, the window disappeared, and nothing happened. does anyone know how to make it work?
