No Audio conundrum

Hello,

I have an Alienware Aurora m9700 laptop that I recently performed a full system restore/reinstallation on, running Windows XP Professional with Service pack 2. Everything now is fine and dandy except for the sound, which is non-functioning. I've tried everything in the Windows troubleshooting guide and in the pinned article in this section of the forum, but nothing seems to work.
The system utilizes what it calls "SoundMAX integrated audio", which I can only interpret to be the built in sound "card" for the laptop. If I am mistaken that may solve a lot of my problems. I've reinstalled the driver for this system several times but to no avail. The system behaves in every way like there should be sound. The volume settings are at max and unmuted, the device manager recognizes the device and says it is functioning properly, there are no notifications or yellow exclamation marks or red marks or anything to do with the sound or video systems of this laptop. When I test the microphone by whistling into it I get a response on the screen and a recording, but the computer still won't actually play the sounds. The only conclusion I can come to is that there's something physically wrong, like and unplugged wire... but considering this is a laptop with integrated speakers, I find that highly unlikely.
Any advice to help solve this conundrum would be most appreciated.

Hi,

Is the computer 100% virus-free now?
Run Kaspersky's online scanner to check.

Try external speakers or headphones to see if it's a hardware problem.
