[SOLVED] Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

I called up the place that replaced the motherboard, and one of their people went through many things with me...we came to some possible conclusions, although none are for sure I suppose. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the sound card, as there is nothing under Device Manager, under the Sound devices category, that has a yellow ? mark/exclamation point next to it (there is an Unknown Device category, but that's not under the Sound category obviously....and I think it has to do with me connecting a Firewire cable to a port on the back of my PC recently to try and transfer some DV video camera footage..which did not work, and gave me some message about my device malfunctioning..I guess I digress, but that just in case it could be a factor in this audio problem).

Youtube audio does not work, neither does an MP3 audio file from my hard drive. Nothing is muted under the Volume thing (that I get to by clicking on the speaker icon next to the Date/Time), except for Microphone and Auxillary.

One thing I should maybe mention is that, before this new motherboard was installed, I had two sound device drivers or managers installed, I think....one was for the Creative SB X-Fi Audio, and the other was called Realtek something. I didn't really mean to install the Realtek one originally, but it was on a CD that came with my PC in the first place, and I had thought it was important...anyway, since then I had to have either one or the other selected as my Audio device, and I'm not positive, but I think it was the Realtek one. The thing is, now I don't see any trace of the Realtek device/drivers/whatever remaining. No icon down by the Date/Time, like I think there used to be, and it is not listed on that screen where I can select an audio device. Only SB X-Fi Audio.

I've had problems with audio before, including a problem similar to this one....I seem to remember a fairly simple solution...I cannot recall it, though... =/

Re: Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

I do not have a good idea where my original CDs are (or if I even had original CDs).

I tried looking on Creative's website, but there are so many different variations on the X-Fi that I cannot figure out which one is mine for sure. Mine just says "SB X-Fi Audio", and I'm pretty sure it's the Soundblaster, but I cannot figure out which link to click on when I delve into the Drivers section on Creative's website.

I may just bring it into my local computer store, and maybe they can hopefully tell me something without them having to look at it, and me having to pay =| Otherwise, I don't know what I'm going to do, if I cannot find those CDs, except for possibly buying a new sound card... :P

Re: Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

I just downloaded and installed the drivers on the top of that page in the link, and the sound still does not work. I went into the SB X-Fi Volume Panel (down by the date and time), and went into the THX Setup Console section, then went to 'Diagnose'. It did some tests, and here are the results:

Creative Diagnostics Test Log
Detected device:
SB X-Fi [E800]

Tested device:SB X-Fi [E800]
05/17/2008 09:05:58AM Drivers Tests Pass
05/17/2008 0902AM Windows Multimedia Tests Pass
05/17/2008 0903AM DirectSound Tests Pass

So I still don't know what the problem is :P

Re: Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

I've checked, and even tried plugging it into the other available (and similar-looking) ports nearby (the guy from the computer place told me to try that, although he just told me to try a black one..I tried the other colors as well, but none worked). Maybe this motherboard and these speakers just do not work together. Though I have tried another set of speakers, as well as a headset, and none work.

It must be something simple...when I press the Power button on the main larger speaker of the the three that I have set up, it makes this one quiet and brief 'zmm' sort of noise that it always did before, except now, of course, I get no sound after that...

Re: Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

Finally...I just tried plugging it into a port on the very bottom of the back of my computer, and it works...which is something I thought I already tried before..

Thanks very much for your help thus far, looks like I'm good now!

Re: Just got motherboard replace; audio does not work; Device Manager has no ?'s

if you were plugging in at the top it would be the onboard
the sound card is at the bottom
