problems playing sounds in players

My computer seems to have no sound. I've run out of ideas of what could possibly be wrong. Everything started going bad when I updated my Internet Explorer (heavens know why the hell I bothered in the first place if I never use it!). My WMP stop producing sounds. Same with Winamp, which I ended up uninstalling. I tried using another player - Gom player, which doesn't work either.

I reinstalled WMP but that didn't solve the problem. I double check that my sound is not muted but that's not the case, as I can hear sound systems but no music. Then, I tried to see if the problem was just limited to files in my library by trying to play a CD, which ended up not working. Then, I checked to see if I had any sound with YouTube, and I didn't. Actually, I'm not completely sure, as every time that I open any player at all, my computer freezes, any program that I try to open goes kaput (with the exception of Spider Solitaire, which seems to be the only program immune to crashing).

I've tried scanning for viruses, malware and the lot, but nothing is coming up. I have no exclamation marks in my device manager apart from one, which is called "Serial", and I have no idea what it does, and I figured it's a bit too vague to look it up in google. I also, by this stage, got a big red exclamation mark in my forehead... Please help me!!!

Thanks a lot by the way, for any help that can come this way :)
