New sound technology Questions??

I am putting together a new PC and i was looking to get a new sound card for it. I havent really been keeping up with the new advancements in sound technology, the last time i can remember 2.1 was the main sound setup for computers. What i do know is i want to have surround sound 7.1 for my computer. I have a few questions on some newer sound options i havent looked into, and how i could get the best sound for my music/gaming needs.

To make it easier i will list the questions i have.
1. What is S/PDIF? And what is the difference between Optical & Coaxial

2. What is HD-DAI? Could this be better than normal style "sound connectors"?

3. Is there a advantage between S/PDIF Flat or Popped out connectors?

4. Is there any thing i should look for when searching for a sound card?

5. Is there any thing new coming out for sound cards?

6. Do you have any Suggestions on Sound cards or Speakers? I was wondering if i could get 5.1 speakers and than guy 2 add on speakers to get the full surround sound?

7. lol i had a few other questions but i went to get a drink and I forgotten them. so if you would like to add any information of your own or just somthing you think i should know fell free to post it.
