Digital/SPDIF Realtek Audio is crackly and hissy in vista

Just got a brand new amp that accepts a digital coaxial/spdif connection. My motherboard GA-K8NXP-SLI (I think) has a Realtek onboard sound with both analogue 8 Channel analogue 3.5mm jacks - which I have been using for the last few months and sound is fine through headphones and speakers. Crystal clear apart from the odd jump in sound which is annoying in its self.

The main problem though, after connecting up my new amp via a digital coax cable to the SPDIF out on the rear of the computer, the audio coming from the amp/speakers is crackly and hissy. The problem also occurs when hooking up headphones directly to the amp.

My machine is running vista and as I say seems to be purely a digital problem. I've tried running the latest drives but without much luck. The soundmanger app says I'm running, 6.0.1.6243 of the driver and the codec is ALC850. Also DirectX 10.0 abd the audio controller is nVidia(0059).

Any ideas how to get this to work?
