Crappy audio

Okay so I didn't really know which forum to put this in. I guess this one will do ;).

I just got a new custom built computer built by my uncle and mailed to me. It had no speakers so I bought some cheap crappy ones. After having poor audio quality, echoing, and for some reason high pitched sound on everything for some time with these crappy speakers I decided to get a new set of more expensive speakers. I did so, but the problems are still there. Echoing, crappy quality, everything is high pitched, I have tried everything I can think of but this is driving me crazy ><

Any suggestions?

Re: Crappy audio

What make/model is your sound card, or is it onboard/integrated?

Have you tried adjusting the advanced settings in the volume control window? Disabling reverb should fix the echoey sound. I'm not sure about the high-pitched thing though without more details.

Do you have this problem with system sounds (WAVs) or just MP3s?

Re: Crappy audio

Realtek AC'97 Audio is what I think the sound card is. How would I tell if it's onboard or integrated?

There is no advanced settings, it's greyed out. I have all of these problems with every sound that comes out of my computer.

Re: Crappy audio

You may have bad sound drivers, it would be best to download them from your MB manufacturer's site but you can get them at the following link.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

Please list your system specs: http://www.techsupportforum.com/558208-post1.html

EDIT: and yes, you have onboard sound.

Re: Crappy audio

You need to download the Realtek AC97 driver from solman's link using the 2nd one in the list (the 18048k one). Click on any of the 3 GO links to download the file to your desktop, then run it to install.

Just to explain about AC97, this is an audio chip on your motherboard rather than a separate sound card. It does the same job but is considered slightly inferior as it depends on the CPU rather than the sound card's capabilities. This doesn't mean AC97 is not worth having, it's fine for games and general Windows use, just don't expect to use it for any high-end music editing.

Let us know how you get on with the driver.
