Modem #1 Line Playback listed as Audio, no Sound

Hello
Our Gateway computer suddenly has no sound.

"Modem #1 Line Playback" is listed as the Audio device.

The correct audio device is not that; we have the original driver installation disc. Have tried to re-install, but it says we're missing something from Windows XP Service Pack 2 and to put that disc in.

We originally downloaded the Service Pack from the Windows website, but we ordered a back up disc. We put the back up disc in and it tells us it's not the right disc (even though it asked for that disc).

We thought of trying to switch to the correct sound card via Device Manager, but we can't access Device Manager either -- we get an error message saying it can't find "mmc.exe".

Has anyone had this problem recently? I found an older thread on this problem but it was pre- Windows XP Service Pack 2, so the problem with the Service Pack 2 disc did not arise.

Thank you.
