OK, my computer was running really slow so I did registry cleaner in addition to my usual anti-virus/spam/adware routines. I also deleted some programs that I never use. I did not delete any drivers. Yet, my speakers quit working but only sometimes.

I get sound when I listen to streaming audio at places like XM Radio, anything played by Windows Media Player, CDs and DVDs, etc.

I do not get sound at places like YouTube and news video streaming at MSNBC (I didn't check the other network).

I don't get what's wrong.

I lost my volume control in my system tray so I thought that maybe my audio drivers had been corrupted. So I went to Gateway and downloaded the driver for my audio. I checked my BIOS to ensure that I was using the proper driver. I downloaded the new driver and followed all specific directions in the readme.txt. Still no sound with YouTube, etc. And still no volume control in the system tray.

I also have gone into Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices. I checked the box for the volume control to be in the system tray. I have done both a regular shut-down and a re-start in the hopes that this would get that volume control back into the system tray. Didn't work.

According to Control Panel, all my audio systems are working properly.

I have SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.

My system is working fast now. So that's great but I really want my audio back. I miss my YouTube!

Any hints would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks, dai. I hope you, or somebody else here, doesn't mind giving me more help because I'm still confused. You're dealing with a neophyte here.

Vista Codec Package: It says that I should "uninstall all codec related installations before installing this comprehensive package". Where do I find these codec relatated installations and how do I uninstall them?

Sherlock: It said that I have problems with
1. AVI_PASS ()
2. MJPEG Decompressor AL/BS ()
3. MJPEG Decompressor AL/BS ()
4. XLCompress ()
5. XLDecompress ()
6. XLDecompress ()
Why did it list 2 of the items twice? So, OK, I have this information. What am I supposed to do with it? I pasted the entire Sherlock report at the bottom of this post in case anyone wants to review it in full.

Gspot: It says that I should move the file that won't run right into the program so it can assess it. But none of the files that won't play sound are on my computer. They are web-based things like YouTube, video files on other websites (like news sites), etc. Is there a way I can copy these files onto my computer to move into Gspot for it to assess?

Sorry to have so many dumb questions. I'm really confused here. Again, if anybody has any other suggestions or doesn't mind holding my hand, I can only say that I really appreciate your time and effort.
