Sound Blaster sound issues, messed up sound
First of all, I really love the forums here guys. By far one of the best I have came across...I have fervently searched the forums but haven't found a fix for my problem yet...
Anyways, I am having some problems on my PC. First of all the system is very slow to load up, taking several minutes to access the login screen. When I'm finally able to log in, programs are very slow to load and my sound is hiccuping like crazy. The sound works fine if I play a song and do nothing; however, when I try to open apps, processes, etc. the music skips and hiccups and my system slows badly. I have installed a Sound Blaster 24-bit card to my system and since onboard sound cannot be disabled in my BIOS, I have taken all of the steps to remove all traces of Realtek sound and drivers. I have tried uninstalling all sound drivers, reinserting the card, and reinstalling the SB drivers, but to no avail. My system specs are not uber, but there is no reason why I should be running as slow as I am and I cannot find any logical reason for my sound issues... CCleaner, Spybot, AAW, and AVG scans are all clean. Right now I can use all the help I can get. If my post is a bit scattered, sorry...If you need any info not listed I will be glad to list it... Thanks in advance guys, Gabe AMD 3400+ Phoenix BIOS 6.00PG 1.5Gb RAM EDT: Is there a way that I can hotlink my system specs in my profile to my posts so you can see more of my specs than listed? I would remove the SB card and see if you can get the PC to work as it used to. This eliminates the possibility that something else got whacked while you were installing and configuring the sound card.
If all is well when you revert back to the onboard sound then I would think that either the SB card is bad or if what you say is true that you cannot disable the onboard sound (some mobos do this automatically) then there may be a conflict of resources. Check your device manager, if the bios disabled the onboard sound it should not show up. |

I will try removing the card again, but the reason I got the card was b/c the onboard sound wasn't working. I'll revert back to the onboard sound, and install the drivers again. If onboard works after this, how should I go about reinstalling the card again to make sure it works right this time?

I see your point. Lets see what happens when you revert to onboard sound first. If all is well but your sound still does not work then reinstall the SB card again and see if the mobo disbales the onboard sound.
If the mobo automatically disables the onboard sound when a sound card is installed then it should not show up in the device manager. Check this with the SB sound card installed. You should only see the SB card as a sound device. Also try a different slot. Last edited by Barry_R; 11-14-2006 at 08:01 PM. |

Ok, well I found out that I could disable the onboard sound in BIOS (wasn't easy to find) and I did that. I put the sound blaster into another PCI slot and proceeded to boot up XP and reinstall all the drivers.
My sound is still crackly and system slows when I open an app or do anything that requires the slightest bit of processing. I turned down all the video settings in XP to best performance, I have done all I can with Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal, defragging, MSConfig changes, etc... I really dont know what to do at this point. Any other ideas? Thanks Gabe |
