garglged soun from discs

Hi, I've had this problem for some time but thought I'd give it an airing. Whenever I play an audio cd(dvd) on my "big" pc (3.2G, 1Gram) the sound has a repeat which is level dependant and results in it sounding like things are under water! This is common to Winamp,WMP, Nero mp. If I open the disc sound with a prog, say Audacity or Samplitude the sound is fine. My pc guru, who built the pc has no answer and since I rarely play cds as such it is not a big deal. My "cooking" pc (601mhz 256) has no such problems and yet most of the stuff on the big one was downloaded from this 'cos I do not put it on the 'net if I can avoid it. ecc83

Hi Spriggan43.Been on to Christian re eax (yes I did have it, don't know how!) says it should cause no problem but since I don't have a Creative card (Ugh!) I can delete all. Did that, reboot, no change. Drivers? have the latest drivers for 2496 and I had this problem when I had a Terratec card anyway, who I slated heartily for the problem, they were not to blame but then they should talk to people, ok! As I say, it is just a niggle and I can get around it. Rock on, ecc83

Any chance that you have a microphone attached to your system?? I have had problems with the mic being on and "hearing" the sound being played then playing it back through the system speakers. If you have the volume too loud it might start to Howl!
No Joke

try putting the mic on mute - only applies if a mic is attached!

Well, I tried, must be something strange happening .. is your sound set to 16 bits, stereo ? maybe it is trying incorrectly give out 5.1 through desktop speakers or something strange like that ? Have you checked the Multimedia settings for you sound output? Do you play direct to speakers (on board amp) or through an external amp?
Just clutching at straws really , but trying to understand where the problem could be .

any chance you're a valve lover, ecc83?

Gargled sound from discs

Hi Done_fishin, I never expected this much interest, maybe I should outline the system...P4 3.2G 1Gram, 800mhzfsb. PCI sound card 2496 outputs to homebuilt 2x60wpch ILP HY128 modules (was part of home hi fi for 10yrs) these feed Pioneer speakers, which are adequate but will be replaced with Tannoys (prob') when funds...N.B.ALL other sound sources are impeccable, I have done recordings (stc-2 cap mic) of acoustic guitar and clarinet at 16 and 24bit using Samplitude 8.3se and earlier Magix studio6. Midi is fine, demos such as BFD are as clean as could be wished. It is just direct play from discs which is distorted. Valves! Don't get me started about valves. Yes they can sound different but I am of the old (Quad amps) school in that I believe that a valve amp, properly designed and run within it's ratings will sound no different to an equally well made bipolar or MOSFET amp, but this is a big subject and I might write an article one day....ecc83
(well spotted)
