Sound card recommendation

Hi,

I am planning on buying a set of microphones to mic up my drum kit. I have seen an 8-set of mic's that I would consider buying (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/8DrumMicKit), though I am not sure what implications this has for my sound card. As I am new to this, I'm not sure whether I will need a sound card with 8 inputs? Is there a way of reducing the amount of inputs needed. Anyway I would be willing to buy a new sound card to support this if they are not too expensive, though I don't know where to look for a fairly priced one.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Nick

Grenville, DON'T by a new sound card. The mic kit you are buying includes capacitor types and need phantom power. If you are happy with the sound you are getting at present look for a 8 to 12 input mixer, There are lots of good mixers on the market. Come back if you need more info.ecc83

soundblaster for Digital Audio work?...not even, in any matter or form...

Grenville, either get a mixer as noted, or if you are really serious about digital recording, spend the money on an 8+ input channel card like the Delta 1010..this would enable you to record all 8 mics to separate tracks and do the mixdown later...

of course, since above card has only 2 mic dedicated inputs, and the rest are RCA, there is that issue....and really, getting into the whole scene of recording multiple inputs 'live' is expensive to a degree...its all really dependant on what you want/need to buy...if you consider what a decent recording studio costs per hour, then if you are really into recording and have a good ear for engineering (placement of mics and such) and mixing, then your investment just might put you ahead in the near long run...

I would suggest starting with a mixer (which should give at least 4 outputs, 2 main and 2 monitor) and then if you decide to carry on, then invest in a good quality, low latency digital audio soundcard...

Grenville, lets get basic; choice 1,feed 8mics thru' an 8ch mixer must have Ppower, mix as you go to get 2tracks on hd via rca card i/ps, (SB will do, not reccomended).Choice 2, PCI card, breakout box to 8ch mics (Delta 1010 is not this) this gives 8 track recording which you can play around with ad nauseium. Choice 3, 8+ch mic mixer to ADAT or firewire (usb works for me but not always for everyone) Lots of manuals to dld, read and ask again. ecc83

Well, yes, S43. IF you have a drum kit AND the space to play it AND no one to upset with noise AND the time to play around mic'ing it up, you have GOT to be fairly comfortable. IF not, DON'T buy an 8 mic kit!!!
