headphone sound good/pc sound gone?

Windows XP home ed - Hp pavillion 1020 - no external speakers.
all sounds coming from headphones, but none from unit.

device mananger: Drivers say OK
sound and Audio Dvivces : no mutes checked, vol up on everthing.

(I had this same problem with an older HP using WIN 95 but can't remember how I solved it.

I have a feeling this is simple and I'm going to have to kill myself when somebody gives me an answer.

in the speaker setup check the sound is set to speakers not to headphones
